Teachmeet
A Teachmeet with a difference: the chance to work collaboratively on ideas and solutions for those times when you have limited resources and then share them with others. Many hands make light work!
Workshops
You will be able to attend two workshops from the choice below. All workshops will be repeated.
WORKSHOP 1: A Strategic, Coordinated and Inclusive Approach to Migration in Leeds, Samantha Powell and Hannah Jameson, Communities Team, Leeds City Council
Our ambition in Leeds is to be a compassionate city with a strong economy. We celebrate our diverse population; we're a city with over 170 different ethnic groups, speaking over 104 languages. New communities form part of the fabric of the city, valuably contributing to our diversity, culture and prosperity.
During this workshop, delivered by Leeds City Council, we will showcase:
- Our strategic, coordinated and inclusive approach to migration
- The Leeds Migration Map: an interactive resource which displays the diversity of new and existing communities in Leeds at a local level. This resource helps us to better understand and evidence our changing communities and need.
- How this work is influencing our current priority to develop a strategy for Learning English in Leeds.
- Participants will have opportunities to share and consider how cities across our the region are working to enable communities to develop their English language skills.
WORKSHOP 2: Busy teachers must haves, Anna Banks
Ania is an ESOL teacher at Leeds City College. Her lessons are engaging, stimulating and individualised. She always looks for new and innovative classroom activities but without hours of preparation as time is not something she (and teachers in general!) has loads to spare.
Ania hopes her workshop will be just as her lessons are - very engaging and full of practical ideas that work for various settings, topics and levels. The workshop will focus mainly on developing speaking/listening and writing skills as well as practising grammar in a more creative way. All the activities shown will require minimum resources and prep time.
WORKSHOP 3: Language from the Learners: creating and maximising opportunities for emergent language in the classroom, Sam Shepherd
In this workshop, we will look at the ways in which we can make use of the language and languages that students bring to the ESOL classroom. You will have the chance to explore ideas around generating language for learning, as well as exploiting this language for development: bring an open mind and some reflections from your own practice!
