15 December 2004

This handbook or compendium of useful information was compiled by a sub-committee of the Life in the United Kingdom Advisory Group with the help of the Citizenship Foundation, following the outline programme of studies in the group's report of 2003, The New and the Old. It is not intended for new arrivals, unless they have good English already, but rather to help ESOL teachers, mentors and other helpers of immigrants. It will provide teachers and lecturers of citizenship 14-18 a valuable store of facts and figures when discussing issues and problems. Applicants for naturalisation who already have ESOL entry level 3 will soon be required to take a test based on indicated sections of this compendium, a compendium which also contains some of the historical background helpful to understand this country.
