ESOL Materials for Migrant Workers Project

The National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) led the ESOL Materials for Migrant Workers Project in partnership with Tribal. It was to work with learners in seven employment sectors at four levels (Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3 and Level 1) to develop really useful bite-sized learning activities. Overall this Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) funded project involved four different types of activity: - research - development of ESOL learning materials - trialling of materials with 18 ESOL providers - analysis of the findings from research and trialling to inform the design and development of key reports Speaking and listening, reading and writing materials were developed to support migrant workers in seven employment sectors: - construction - health and social care - manufacturing - catering - transport and aviation - agriculture - cleaning and facilities management. The materials were used by employers; skills brokers, union learning representatives and work based learning providers. Bilingual glossaries for the seven sectors were translated to Polish. The project produced - A research paper with literature review - ESOL learning materials at Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3 and Level 1 - Bilingual glossaries in English/Polish - A final report of the findings and recommendations The materials are available on the Excellence Gateway http://www.excellencegateway.org.uk/page.aspx?o=196280.
