The National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) has agreed to establish and support an independent commission of inquiry to undertake a major strategic review of lifelong learning. Over the next 18 months, partners from government, business, academia, trade unions, public services, providers and the voluntary and community sector will come together in a process intended to identify a broad consensus for the future direction of lifelong learning policy in the UK. Professor Sir David Watson has accepted an invitation from the Board of NIACE to chair the independent commission. This briefing, which is available at http://www.niace.org.uk/lifelonglearninginquiry/docs/inquirybriefing1.doc is the first of a series intended to inform those with an interest in the inquiry about the progress of the commission and to highlight opportunities to contribute to the debate about the future for lifelong learning in the UK. As part of this work, the Commission of Inquiry will be issuing a number of calls for evidence on eight key themes. For further information http://www.niace.org.uk/lifelonglearninginquiry/
