British Council Seminars Tuesday 21 June 2011, 1700 - 2030 British Council, 10 Spring Gardens, London, SW1A 2BN A new film about the trials and tribulations for young refugees learning English in the UK will be launched by the British Council and the Refugee Council at a screening in London on 21st June, as part of Refugee Week 2011. Finding Home is a documentary following a group of young refugees from Somalia, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Burma as they are taught English at the Refugee Council on arrival in the UK. Through the young people’s testimonials, the film made by the British Council reflects the raft of challenges the young refugees face in making a home for themselves here and accessing the language. Programme: 1700 – 1730 Welcome and refreshments 1730 – 1815 Introductions and screening of the film 1815 – 1900 Networking reception Followed by: ESOL Workshop: Differentiated learning supported by technology With Amanda Wilson, Callie Wilkinson, Mike Harrison and Phil Bird This workshop aims to consider practical strategies that teachers can employ with immediate effect in the ESOL classroom to meet a range of different learning needs. The session will be based on real classroom experiences and how we, as teachers, have adapted materials and responded to the individual reactions of our students to these resources. This action research project has been facilitated throughout by the use of technology, both in terms of assisting the teacher in accessing and reflecting upon the above resources, and for creating engaging, differentiated materials for learners.
