London Education Research Unit would like to invite you to the London Seminar: 'Languages of London: Population, language, ethnicity and socio-economic aspects of education' Presenters: Michelle von Ahn , London Borough of Newham and ESRC User Fellow, IOE Dr Ruth Lupton, LSE Thursday 24 September 5.30 – 7.00 pm Institute of Education, Room 944, 20 Bedford Way, London WC1H 0AL This seminar will report on emerging findings from an ESRC-funded research project to map the languages of London and to analyse relationships between language, ethnicity, socio-economic status and educational attainment. We will present maps of London's linguistic diversity and change since a similar exercise was since attempted in 1999. We will explore relationships between language and educational attainment and explore whether knowing about a student's home language helps us to understand more about attainment patterns than knowing only their ethnicity. Implications of the work for policy and practice will be discussed, along with methodological challenges. All researchers, practitioners and students are welcome. These seminars are free. Please register with Chris To, at c.to@ioe.ac.uk
