Community and Lesser Taught Languages: Planning, Promotion and Awareness Conference Routes into Languages North West Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 November 2009 Manchester CALL FOR ABSTRACTS Hosted by The Routes into Languages North West consortium, the Community and Lesser Taught Languages (COLT) conference will take place in Manchester on 18 and 19 November 2009. The conference is aimed at Community Languages policy makers and language planners, complementary and mainstream school teachers and headteachers, researchers and doctoral students. The aim of the conference is to promote the COLT project, develop links and opportunities for involvement in the project as well as information dissemination, discussion and sharing good practice. Researchers, doctoral students, policy makers and planners are invited to submit abstracts for oral presentations in any area of Community Languages teaching and learning and promotion and status, including policy and planning. The conference will be opened by the Routes into Languages NW consortium Director and Head of the Language Department at Manchester Metropolitan University, Doctor Sharon Handley-Belkacemi who will give an overview of the COLT project. We will also be honoured by Professor Itesh Sachdev from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, who will give a plenary talk. The first day of the conference will concentrate on Community Languages Promotion and Status-raising and the second day will focus on Teaching and Learning. Papers should address one of the two themes. Key dates: Abstracts to be received by Tuesday 15 September 2009 Registration closing date: Wednesday 28 October 2009 The price of the conference is £75 for both days and £50 for one day. The price includes all refreshments including an evening meal but not accommodation. We offer bursaries for teachers within the supplementary school sector and students.
