Hence, we now operate in what is called the post-method era. Yet methods formerly provided teachers with a certain sense of security, a role which perhaps coursebooks now fulfil. This security is illusory, though, if it is not grounded in some basic principles of learning and education, principles that I will attempt to identify, and which (I will argue) constitute a blueprint for a coherent approach to language teaching'. Scott Thornbury is a teacher and teacher educator, with over 30 years' experience in English language teaching, and an MA from the University of Reading. He is currently Associate Professor of English Language Studies at the New School in New York, where he teaches on an on-line MATESOL program. His previous experience includes teaching and teacher training in Egypt, UK, Spain and in his native New Zealand. His writing credits include several award-winning books for teachers on language and methodology. He is also series editor for the Cambridge Handbooks for Teachers (CUP). http://www.thornburyscott.com/ The Waterloo Centre is about 5 minutes walk from Waterloo mainline and underground (Bakerloo, Jubilee, Northern, Waterloo & City lines) stations. Southwark Underground station (Jubilee Line) is opposite the centre. Buses: 1, 4, 26, 45, 63, 68, 100, 109, 155, 168, 171, 172, 176, 188, 381
