Gender on the Agenda: Women, skills and work seminar Thursday 18 June 2009, 1pm – 4:15pm In the current recession it is important to recognise where women and men are differentially affected by job losses, the pay and opportunity gaps, and the constraints and barriers to women accessing new employment or skills retraining. The recommendations of the National Skills Forum report 'Closing the gender skills gap’ February 2009 provide useful directions. We can learn from the programmes targeted at women in previous recessions to develop policy and practice responses that address the barriers women face in accessing the labour market and learning and skills training in current contexts. This seminar aims to: • brief participants on issues relating to the gender aspects of skills and work • discuss and debate implications for policy and practice • identify ways in which the learning and skills agenda can be developed to respond better to gender dimensions.
