Ruth Hayman Trust Silver Jubilee 15 May 2008 This year, 2008, is the Ruth Hayman Trust’s Silver Jubilee. We are celebrating with an event at South Africa House on 15 May, and also mounting a special appeal. The appeal For the past four years, with the support of many members of the national association for teachers of English to adults (NATECLA), we have given away an average of £16,000 annually to help fund the education and training of adults with a first language other than English, and who would not otherwise be able to afford to study. But by the end of this financial year we will have less than £10.000 in hand. We therefore desperately need to raise funds. Please help. Every donation is valuable. There will also be an evening at South Africa House on 15 May on the theme of refuge and exile. This will explore the experience of both those who seek refuge and those who support them. Ruth Hayman herself was banned for her human rights activities, and in the late 1960s, had to leave South Africa. But as soon as she arrived in the UK she began helping others by setting up Neighbourhood English classes across north London. We are very grateful to our patrons Sue MacGregor and Janet Suzman, also with South African connections, for agreeing to join us for the evening. We hope to welcome as many of our supporters as possible but those who cannot make it to London can take part in the Silent Auction which will be part of the evening.
