Asylum seekers and refugees are 5 times more likely to experience difficulties with their mental health than the general population, as a result of pre-migration, during migration and post-migration experiences. The webinar will explore the experiences of trauma-affected learners in our ESOL classrooms by examining the impact that their physical environment can have on their psychological and emotional well-being. Participants will discover how simple changes in and out of the classroom can have a transformative effect on our students’ sense of safety.
Our guest speaker Orsi Dunn has been involved in English language teaching for 16 years in a wide range of contexts. She has worked in Hungary, Italy and the UK in a number of roles in ESOL, EAP and EFL. She has been an ESOL and Core Skills lecturer at Ayrshire College since 2014 and has an enjoyably wide ESOL remit ranging from ESOL delivery, ESOL tutor training, events organisation and community accreditation work. Her special interests are ESOL literacies, social practice based learning and teaching and using literature in the ESOL/EFL classroom and now, Trauma in the ESOL Classroom.
