Compliance and Complacency: a Critical Analysis of ESOL Provision in Scotland

I also consider the potential impact of the recent decision to include ESOL within a wider Adult Learning Strategy.

Workshop Session Options

CHOOSE FROM SESSION A, B OR C

Session A: Amanda Avison (Dundee & Angus College)

Pronunciation to develop listening skills
Listening in the ESOL classroom, are we testing or developing skills?
This workshop is based on the idea that we need to add to the logical emphasis on comprehension and top-down strategies, which are taught to increase our learners’ chance of understanding, by adding more focus on bottom-up skills, on spoken language and how it sounds, to develop our learners’ ability to decode meaning from the sound of spoken English. That is, it will focus on pronunciation to develop listening skills.
The workshop will consist of activities and training ideas that can be done pre and post listening. We will take advantage of being together face to face and have a very practical hands-on workshop in which participants will share ideas, try out activities and work together to create new ones.
Participants will leave with a ‘toolbox’ of ideas on using pronunciation to develop listening skills.
