All ESOL practitioners - from managers and researchers to teachers and trainees - are invited to join us for our online conference. It provides an opportunity for ESOL professionals from across the 2 branch regions and beyond to engage in an afternoon of high quality talks and workshops and to meet with like-minded professionals.

Mary Osmaston – Learning Better for the Long Term 

Learning a language is cumulative, so our students need to remember what they’ve learnt in order to build on it at the next stage and to use it in their lives.  In this workshop we will look at some of the research into long-term learning and find out which teaching activities are most effective in promoting this.

Chris Walklett - ‘Real’ English & ideas on how to approach it in the ESOL classroom

One of the roles of the ESOL teacher is to teach the kind of language students are likely to need to use in the outside world. But much more important and useful than productive use is receptive understanding of the language they are likely to hear on a day-to-day basis.

This diverse session will look at what constitutes ‘real’ English including focusing on cultural misunderstanding, slang, euphemism, idioms, responding appropriately, and other ‘common usage’ items, even touching on the taboo, AKA bad, language.

This session will focus not only on vocabulary, but also briefly on grammar and pronunciation. Ideas and activities will include role plays and listening tasks.

Carol Samlal – Making Sustainability Matter

So far, the focus has been on how to embed sustainability in our lessons and what resources are available. However, there are other elements to teaching sustainability that are integral to its value both in the classroom and beyond.
 
This workshop will explore how to ‘join the dots’ to better understand how to connect the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SGD) to current issues in the world. We will pay particular attention to the displacement of people due to climate change or conflict/war, for example what is happening in Ukraine. Workshop participants should then be able to have a better appreciation of the SDGs, and how to relate this in a meaningful way as part of their lessons, classroom and life beyond the college.
