Workshop Options

Please note that although it would be helpful for you to have made your decision before the day of the Conference you do not need to book your workshops when you register.

A : Teaching Mixed Levels Online - Olena Kirkup (ESOL & Community Interpreting tutor, Workers’ Educational Association, Norfolk)

This workshop shares some useful tips and techniques on how to successfully engage mixed-level group learners in interactive online lesson activities. Participants will have the opportunity to get involved in the demonstration of some activities and receive a little list of useful links to take away.

B : Developing independent learning and self-study skills - Liz Hulford Wood (Teaches ESOL at Luton Adult Learning)

In this workshop you will come away with lots of ideas to develop the learners' understanding of learning independently and of the role of this skill in their own language learning, and to encourage independent learning in your learners.

C : Developing Learners' Essential Digital Skills through Action Research - Suzie Wall (Lead tutor English and ESOL, Barnsley)

In this practical session you will reflect on your practice in the (online) classroom, and consider how an action research approach could be used to develop your learners' essential digital skills. You will identify an issue or need related to EDS in your teaching/ learning and, working with a partner, consider practical strategies and approaches to try out next lesson.

D : Progressing Pre-Entry students in literacy and language - Caroline Large (CELTA and TESOL trainer, Birmingham)

Some Pre-Entry students appear to make slow progress with very basic needs in both literacy and language. However, there are techniques which can be used to push learning forward, alongside catering for mixed ability levels. This is a practical, hands-on workshop, where delegates will participate in learning a foreign language and script, with immediate ESOL classroom applications.

E: Embedding digital skills into ESOL - Carol Samlal (ESOL & EDS tutor, Adult Community Learning, Essex)

Teaching digital skills as part of ESOL in synchronous and asynchronous learning should be at the core of our delivery, as online classes become part of our overall delivery. This workshop will explore various ideas for embedding digital skills from E1 to L2, with an aim to boosting learner independence and confidence.

F : How to support learners accessing online learning - Neena Chauhan ( Project Manager,  Fircroft College of Adult Education)

This workshop will share experience of supporting access to online learning of Pre-entry and/or low digital literacy learners.

We will identify what participants already do to support this particular group and then share the current learning from our ESOL project and how we established a pre entry class with 15 students fully engaging.  Participants should walk away with a checklist of key considerations when trying to improve access to online learning.
