Your feedback needed on new basic literacy and grammar modules

Education and Training Foundation's (ETF) development of two interactive online modules:

  • Module 1: Teaching basic literacy to ESOL learners
  • Module 2: Grammar support for ESOL learners in English Functional Skills and GCSE classes

Webinars

The Foundation (ETF) contracted Ideas4Learning to build two interactive online modules for practitioners in the Further Education (FE) sector, one to assist them in teaching basic English literacy to speakers of other languages whose first language is not English (ESOL), the other to enable them to support ESOL learners on their English Functional Skills and GCSE courses to work independently on their grammar. As subject experts, NATECLA and  Learning Unlimited have developed the content and we have been working closely with Ideas4Learning throughout the project to ensure the modules meet the needs of practitioners.

The modules are now in draft form and we invite feedback from the sector to ensure that the modules meet their needs. As part of this we are delivering two webinars to present the draft modules.

Webinar 1 – Teaching basic literacy to ESOL learners.

  • Date: February 11th 2019
  • Time: 14:30 – 15:00

>> Register for the webinar

Presented by Sally Betts (developer - Ideas4learning Ltd) and Judith Kirsh (content writer – Learning Unlimited).

  • Who the module is for: ESOL teachers, trainers and support assistants who would like to improve their knowledge and skills in teaching basic literacy to ESOL learners.
  • Module aim: The module provides an introduction to teaching ‘basic literacy’ to ESOL learners. It focuses on developing an initial understanding of what is involved in reading and writing at a beginning level, and suggests some starting points for working with learners who are beginner readers and writers.
  • Module access: The module has been designed for users to work through it sequentially.

Webinar 2 – Grammar support for ESOL learners in English Functional Skills and GCSE classes

  • Date: February 11th 2019
  • Time: 15:15 – 15:45

>> Register for the webinar

Presented by Barbara Nance (developer - Ideas4learning Ltd) and Jenny Roden (content writer - NATECLA).

  • Who the module is for: Trained English GCSE and Functional Skills English practitioners, who are not trained ESOL teachers, and who are keen to better meet the needs of ESOL learners in their classes.
  • Module aim: This module aims to better equip teachers to identify common grammar mistakes their ESOL learners may be making and better support their learners to recognise and respond to these.
  • Module access:  It is anticipated that those accessing the module will dip in and out, accessing the elements that they find the most relevant and helpful.
