Further Details

Katherine Low Settlement are looking for a wonderful ESOL teacher for a very special new project this summer. We are planning to run a four week ESOL summer course for 20 young unaccompanied refugees aged 14-19. There would be 2 x 2.5 classes each day, and the pay would be £25 per hour for this teaching time, plus an hour a week prep and admin at £15 per hour, and there would be an hour lunch break in between classes. For the project, there would be an additional day facilitated by a Love to Learn staff member for activities for the young people. During summer 2018 we propose to deliver 4 ESOL classes (2.5 hours each) each week for 4 weeks, with 20 newly-arrived Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children, aged 14-19. Most are living in foster homes in the area.

These students from Wandsworth and neighbouring boroughs attend Southfields Academy and other local secondary schools. Our Love to Learn already works with this cohort providing a programme of volunteer Learning Mentors and Education Advice and Advocacy during the term. This summer we identified the need for these newly-arrived students to continue learning English over the summer break to help them to be better prepared for the start of the new school year in September, continue to build a strong foundation for the rest of their education; whilst being able to provide pastoral support and an opportunity to develop friendships and support networks.

We value the learners’ input and interaction. The course will be taught in a very participative and engaging manner, which require the learners to help shape the content of the course. The basis of the course will focus on improving their English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. They will also be involved in our wider L2L Summer Programme and get them to help organise workshops and trips in order to develop their confidence, social-emotional skills, widen their friendships and support networks, and to ensure that the activities are relevant to them.
