The UK Border Agency is responding to some of the comments and suggestions about the Citizenship test requirements. People who have been in the UK for some time and have acquired good oral fluency in English, ie E3 or above, with or without the benefit of ESOL classes but are not literate in English have been at a particular disadvantage as they do not qualify for the ESOL route and would struggle with the handbook. The Stationery Office (TS0) has published an Audio CD version of the handbook - you can order it from - http://www.tsoshop.co.uk/bookstore.asp?trackid=002017&FO=1240167&DI=591067. Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship is essential listening for those: - taking the Citizenship test to qualify for British citizenship or settlement; - wanting to apply for British citizenship or settlement; or - teaching English or basic skills to refugees, immigrants or prospective applicants for British citizenship or settlement. On 2 April 2007, the new settlement test and revised life in the United Kingdom citizenship test came into effect. Applicants for citizenship or settlement (also known as 'permanent residence' or 'leave to remain') in the United Kingdom must pass the Life in the United Kingdom citizenship test or take the special English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) course. Please note: ''Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship - 2nd Edition (2007) - Audio CD Version' (ISBN 0113413181) has superseded 'Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship - 1st Edition (2005)' (out of print - no longer available to purchase). As of 2 July 2007, the test is based on the second edition only. It is no longer possible to take the test using the 1st Edition.
