NIACE (National Institute of Adult Continuing Education) has been commissioned by the NRDC (National Research and Development Centre) to carry out research into the attendance and participation of black and minority ethnic groups in Skills for Life (SfL) provision. We will be reviewing existing research and producing case studies of innovative practice. We are interested in a wide range of contexts and settings, including practice in different communities, in rural and urban areas, in different contexts (FE, ACL, VCS, etc.) The final product will be a guide for practitioners and provider on how to work effectively with black and minority ethnic communities. To this end, we would like to ask if you are aware of any: 1.Existing research, data or reports that refer to the involvement of black and minority ethnic groups in SfL provision, including information on participation rates, barriers and the impacts of non participation, the impact of SfL provision and key success factors in recruiting and providing for these learners; and 2.Learning organisations (including voluntary and community organisations) that are successfully working with black and minority ethnic groups and supporting them to participate, progress and achieve within SfL provision, as potential case study sites. If you are able to offer any suggestions to contribute to this work, or if you are interested in finding out more about the project, please email caroline.law@niace.org.uk or telephone me on 0116 2044249. We hope to hear from you by the end of September 2007.
