LLUK Snapshot survey of Skills for Life staff
The first in-depth analysis of qualifications held by Skills for Life staff is about to get underway at Lifelong Learning UK.
The Department for Education and Skills has asked LLUK to carry out the snapshot survey this autumn in order to get a better picture (in terms of workforce numbers, characteristics, qualifications, location and work patterns) of the workforce responsible for raising standards of literacy, language and numeracy among adults in England.
A second survey will take place in three years’ time to see how the picture changes as more staff gain the necessary qualifications to work as specialists in the learning and skills sector.
Paul Hambley, LLUK’s Skills for Life manager, says there are no accurate figures for the number of teachers and other staff delivering Skills for Life courses, let alone their training and development. “If we want to have a fully qualified workforce, we need to know who is already qualified and who isn’t,” he adds.
Two full-time advisers are being recruited to answer Skills for Life enquiries concerning professional development. About one third of calls and emails received by the Lifelong Learning UK Information and Advice Service concern Skills for Life programmes, and this is expected to increase as LLUK assumes the new role of National Reference Point for Skills for Life.
