Organisations hoping to become Centres for Excellence in Teacher Training (CETTs) will discover during the next few weeks what selectors are looking for in applications. Standards Verification UK (SVUK) has been asked by the Department for Education and Skills to lead development on the selection criteria for teacher trainers ahead of them submitting bids for CETT status. Information on the selection process will be made available for the first time at three dissemination events, to be held by the subsidiary company of LLUK across England in late September. CETTs are expected to be set up by September 2007. The principles upon which CETTs should operate have been established after extensive consultation across the learning and skills sector over the past 15 months. Higher education institutions, colleges and learning providers from work-based and community settings are being encouraged to bid in appropriate groupings. “This is not a single organisation initiative,” says SVUK chief officer Susan Edge. “It’s about developing a partnership to create a step change in the quality of initial teacher training and continuing professional development.” Following the dissemination events applications will need to be submitted in November. Once a shortlist has been established, a second stage of bidding will take place early next year, with the successful applicants announced in April 2007. Susan Edge says that SVUK is delighted to be leading the selection process on behalf of the DfES, and is looking forward to working with an independent panel to decide which organisations become CETTs. Interest has already been shown by a number of institutions and the criteria drawn up will help determine which organisations are likely to be successful. “Once people have seen the technical information, they can decide for themselves whether to bid,” she adds. Dissemination events on CETTs applications will be held in: London on Tues 26 Sept York on Wed 27 September Bristol on Thurs 28 September Source: lluk e bulletin http://www.lluk.org/home/home.html
