Workshops

The following workshops will be available to delegates:

WORKSHOP SESSION 1: From 12.45 to 13.45.

Choose from one of the following:

  • Promoting Literacy and Inclusion through ESOL, Elhum Jhanji - Helping learners stay well and get better access to services, by using a website to improve pathways to information and digital literacy.
  • The Literacy/ESOL interface (digital literacy), John Sutter - Our literacies are changing fast:  reading and writing is now mostly mediated by technology, and mostly multimodal. We read and write not only with our pens, but with our cameras and our bodies too. What does this mean for ESOL?
  • How does L1 learning affect learning a second language (a neuro-linguistic approach), Jennifer Foley - Informed by recent cognitive neuroscience research, this workshop will  examine how the acquisition and development of one’s first/background language can impact the learning of another, particularly for learners with a specific language impairment, dyslexia or poor comprehension. We will cover the four main skills plus development of phonology, semantics and grammar.  We will look at case studies of individual learners and devise effective classroom practice and activities informed by this latest understanding.

WORKSHOP SESSION 2: From 15:00 to 16:00

Choose from one of the following:

  • Grammar in high level Literacy classes, Yvonne Bizayi and Meltem Dincer - This session is to explore best ways to embed grammar within literacy lessons.  By the end of this workshop, you will have come up with different useful contexts which will help you shape your Scheme of Work
  •  Poetry literate, Linda Ulrich - Reading and writing poetry in the ESOL classroom
  • Research and practice in Adult literacy, Tara Furlong - Based on a recent study of experienced English language and literacy educators from across the adult learning sector, this workshop looks at which research-engaged practices contribute both to improving learning outcomes, formal and informal, and to supporting the tutors’ professional wellbeing.
