WORKSHOP 1: The ESOL Young Learner teacher- strategies, stories and resources! Sophie Hughes and Gillian Davis

Our ESOL classrooms are welcoming a surge of Young Learners (YLs) - so how can we ensure our teaching is relevant and appropriate? This workshop will explore teaching strategies and provide practical ideas on how to adapt your teaching practice to YLs. The session will include stories from the classroom, resource ideas/examples, advice regarding SOWs and it will also be a space to share practitioner experiences.

Additionally, there will be two YL mentors who can inform and advise about common issues experienced by YLs such as the asylum process and local council procedures.

About Sophie

Sophie is an ESOL Young Learner lecturer at South and City College. After completing her training within the college, she has worked at various campuses over the past three years. Originally training in Post Compulsory, Sophie found herself teaching Young Learners at the Hall Green campus and has been on a journey of discovery ever since. She has recently completed her Masters in Post Compulsory Education at the University of Wolverhampton, resulting in a dissertation entitled: ‘The modern ESOL teacher: the prism of roles and responsibilities’, whereby she explored the impact of Young Learners on ESOL teacher practice and identity.

About Gillian

Gillian has been an ESOL teacher for twelve years and during that time has worked in the Middle East. Gillian is an ESOL Young Learner teacher at South and City College. She claims that teaching Young Learners has reinvigorated her teaching practice and added a new dimension to her teacher identity. She would like the opportunity to share her experiences and approaches in the classroom.

WORKSHOP 2: 'Connecting early phonics and home language in Family Learning and ESOL settings' Mary-Rose Puttick

Sponsor bannerThis workshop will include an overview of how phonics is taught in schools with ideas of how to adapt this approach for parents and non-parents in FL and ESOL contexts. Participants will have the opportunity to try out some fun activities in which phonics and vocabulary are connected to diverse home languages. This strategy is underpinned by a holistic approach to learning with the aim of building confidence and collaboration. The workshop is particularly useful for those teaching pre-entry and Entry 1 level learners. Teachers will leave the session with some practical resource ideas as well as having had the chance to share any phonics foibles!

About Mary-Rose

Mary-Rose is a PhD Researcher and Assistant Lecturer in Education at Birmingham City University. Prior to this she taught Family Learning and ESOL for Manchester Adult Education Service for 12 years. She is currently voluntary teaching refugee and migrant mothers in two family literacy classes in Birmingham, which will form the basis of her PhD research.

WORKSHOP 3 The Wonder of Online Assessment Tools  Joseph Homer

If you love teaching but hate marking, this is for you. This session is an introduction and exploration of some of the leading online assessment tools available to teachers. The session compares the differences between setting paper worksheets and using online tools for automated marking. Attendees will try out popular tools such as Google Forms, Kahoot and Plickers and discover the best use for each tool as classwork or homework. This session explores blended learning and how these tools not only replace paper methods but also allow educators to do unique things with assessment.

About Joseph

Joseph has been an ESOL lecturer at South and City College for the past twelve years. Before this he taught English at every level including A Level. He has worked with the Quality team at the college for around five years and is currently a Teaching Excellence Lead for Foundation Studies at the college. In the past he created a traffic light system for tracking student starting points and grouping students for differentiation. His current focuses include Assessment for Learning and Technology for Learning. Joseph trains staff at the college on using different types of technology in the classroom.

WORKSHOP 4 Why I moved to Google after using Moodle for almost ten years! Pawel Waluszko

Google Classroom is a VLE that’s simple, beautiful and super fast. Now I’m able to engage ALL my students with technology regardless of their level of English. Pop in and let’s explore together how to use Google apps to create an online course from scratch, assignments in Docs, quizzes, reading tests and questionnaires in Forms, and collaborative presentations in Slides. We’re going to examine how to track your students’ grades, give them feedback (Docs), encourage them to share their work and review their learning targets. Come with your ideas too, and we’ll do our best to make them a reality.

About Pawel

Pawel has been teaching ESOL for 10 years in Birmingham. He currently works at South and City College Birmingham as a Main Grade Lecturer (ESOL). He's always been interested in the use of technology in learning. After gaining his MA in Education (Applied Linguistics), he found interest in incorporating new ways of teaching with interactive resources in order to enhance students' experience in learning.
