Workshop details

Details for all workshops on offer are as follows:

Eastern sponsors1. Literacy for Lower Level learners – an introduction, Judy Kirsh

In this short, interactive workshop, we will consider what is involved in teaching basic literacy to ESOL learners who may have no, or very little, literacy in English or any other language. We will share ideas for teaching reading to learners with basic literacy needs, including the ‘language experience’ approach, and watch a short video extract of a teacher using this approach. We will then discuss how you could use this approach in your own teaching contexts.

2. Principles and Practices of Teaching Beginners (using Mandarin), Giles Armour

This session will include 30 minutes of learning some basic phrases in Mandarin Chinese, followed by a short discussion about the techniques and materials used. The session will make links with how we teach Pre Entry ESOL students and remind teachers of the needs of a beginner learner. The session is based on the unknown language module of the TESOL course.

3. The Impact of Digital tools on teaching & learning in the ESOL classroom, Rachel Turner

Padlet, Plickers, QRcodes and British Council apps, to name just a few. The impact on learning, engagement and collaboration when using digital tools in the ESOL classroom and beyond.

4. Making Learning Visible, Emily Curran

This workshop will explore practical strategies that teachers can use to help to make learning more visible for both teachers and learners, and will provide time for participants to consider how these strategies might transfer to their settings.
