MaWSIG Pre-Conference Event – 9 April 2018: ‘Writing for the world’

£10 discount available to NATECLA members: see details below

This year the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL) is holding its annual conference in Brighton, from 10th- 13th April. Attended by approximately 3,000 ELT professionals from more than 100 countries, it involves a 4-day programme of around 500 talks, workshops and symposiums as well as a vibrant social programme.

On the 9th April, the IATEFL Special Interest Groups hold pre-conference events. MaWSIG, the Materials Writing Special Interest Group, would like to invite NATECLA members to attend our PCE as we believe it will be of particular interest to teachers working in ESOL.

English is a global language, and the focus of ELT is no longer on a limited range of learners and settings. We’re developing a broader understanding of who our students are, where they are and what they need. This Pre-Conference Event will examine the implications of this shift for materials writers. To what extent do today’s ELT materials reflect the global use of the language?

This PCE brings together five speakers with expertise in different aspects of writing for the world. They will consider the wide range of contexts where English is taught and will explore how context affects materials design.

Marek Kiczkowiak will start the day by exploring what ‘writing for the world’ generally means for ELT materials development. Laura Patsko will then talk about how materials can support the development of pronunciation in this global context. Romulo Neves will explore the adaptation of materials for learners with a wide range of special educational needs, such dyslexia or ADHD. Psyche Kennett will consider how materials for international emergency and international development contexts can address themes such as gender and human rights, non-violent communication, good governance and critical thinking. Finally, Julie Day will draw on projects working with ESOL learners and teachers in the UK and will address the specific needs of this population. There will also be a panel discussion where all these issues are developed, and your questions answered.

The MaWSIG 2018 PCE will be a day of learning, sharing and networking with other people involved in materials development- whether as teachers writing for their classrooms, professional writers, editors or publishers. Hear experts in their field giving insights into new challenges and new ways of thinking about materials development.
