The RSC Roadshow: using mobile technology to enhance learning by Chris Barber
The JISC RSC Yorkshire and Humber Roadshow is an interactive workshop with an emphasis on collaborative scenario based activities. We will be using a range of tools and technologies but the intention is that the 'kit' or 'tool' is not the starting point.  We will introduce a range of mobile devices and offer a number of appropriate scenarios based around ESOL. Participants will work in small groups to decide what they wish to achieve and how they may achieve this using the tools and technologies available. The groups will then present their solutions to the workshop.

Active Citizenship and English (ACE) Project – Teaching 'basic literacy' to ESOL learners by Judy Kirsh

Learners who are struggling to read and write in English present a challenge for the ESOL teacher: How do
you teach someone to read and write? What’s the best way? Where do you start? This workshop will
provide an opportunity to discuss some of the issues as well as consider one successful strategy for
developing learners’ basic reading and writing skills - the 'language experience’ approach. We will watch a
short video clip of a teacher using this approach, followed by discussion.

Cognitive Assessments for Multilingual Learners – an holistic approach to identifying dyslexia by Anne Margaret Smith
Teachers are becoming increasingly aware of the issues that dyslexia and other specific learning differences (SpLDs) can bring to the language classroom. However, it is not always easy to determine which of our learners’ difficulties may be due to a SpLD, or another cause. This workshop offers ELT practitioners the chance to try out some of the CAML assessment tools designed specifically for identifying SpLDs in English language learners, and discuss the key indicators – and red herrings – that can lead to a confident identification of SpLDs in multilingual learners.
This is a repeat of the popular session run at NATECLA national conference in July 2013.

Breaking the Ice, Addressing LGBT Issues In The ESOL Classroom by Laila El-Metoui
The presentation will explore the need to foster a welcoming atmosphere where all feel free to talk about themselves, their identities and personal lives, should they choose to do so. Contextualised within the new Ofsted CIF (Common Inspection Framework), the talk will offer practical ideas to managers and ESOL practitioners and highlight the need to have an approach fully integrated within the curriculum. The session will look at a range of activities ESOL practitioners can incorporate in their Scheme of Work and will equip participants with practical tools for tackling homophobia, transphobia and biphobia at all levels. Delegates will have the opportunity to reflect on their own practice and share good practice.

This is a repeat of the popular session run at NATECLA national conference in July 2013.

Teaching and Learning in ESOL Maths by Jenny Stacey
This workshop will give participants an opportunity to look at the benefits of ESOL Maths courses to colleges and learners, who is likely to be teaching them, what aspects of ESOL benefit by adding Maths to the curriculum, and what barriers learners can meet that you as a teacher might want to be aware of, such as those in pronunciation, intonation, writing and spelling, to name a few! Copies of some resources developed by the presenter will be available, which you might find useful, and ideas for classroom activities.

This is a repeat of the popular session run at NATECLA national conference in July 2013.

Sam Shepherd, teacher trainer and experienced teacher of adults will share his reflections and experiences of teaching 16-18s, and invites you to discuss your problems and celebrate your achievements in teaching this exciting area of ESOL.
