ESOL in Scotland: changes, challenges and opportunities
Abstract:
This talk is based on the preliminary findings of the research project ‘Language learning and migrant 'integration' in Scotland: exploring infrastructure, provision and experiences’ (2019-22). In this qualitative study, we explored the complex landscape of ESOL provision in Scotland through a comparison between Glasgow and Aberdeenshire, and incorporating the perspectives of diverse ESOL providers, decision-makers, practitioners and learners. The fieldwork, which we mainly conducted between February and August 2021, took place at a point when ESOL in Scotland was undergoing profound changes in terms of policy and governance, and as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In this talk, we aim to outline the changes affecting the ESOL sector, and discuss some of the challenges and opportunities arising as a result. With this in mind, we contextualise Scottish ESOL within the broader, changing landscape of UK and Scotland migration and educational policies (i.e. Brexit, the UK asylum and resettlement policy, Adult Education). We also explore some of the diversity we have found within and between our research locations with regards to infrastructure, provision and learners’ profiles and experiences. We suggest that this diversity adds to the complexity of the picture but also provides insights into pockets of opportunity and many rich examples of excellent practice to be shared. The talk is based on interviews with experts (ESOL providers, decision- makers – 16), teachers and community-based practitioners (17) and learners (22), and brings into conversation their different perspectives.

Option A: Amanda Avison (Dundee and Angus College)
Some tips for using technology to teach pronunciation
Having had to move online over recent times, people may feel that they want to move away from all things technological… but there are many ways in which technology can be used to teach and practice pronunciation. Come along to this practical workshop for demonstrations and interaction. Participants will leave with ideas to use in the classroom and information on how to set them up.
The workshop will use Celce-Murcia’s communicative framework for teaching pronunciation and give at least one idea for using technology for each of the main stages: description and analysis, listening discrimination, controlled practice, guided practice and communicative practice. There will be demonstrations and participants will be encouraged to join in with some activities and work together to create a communicative activity. The session will finish by asking participants to discuss which of the technology tips they could use for recycling and revision and to share their ideas.
The ideas for the workshop can be adapted to be used online or in a face-to-face classroom (if students have access to equipment) and for homework. Participants will be given notes to take away to help them set up and use the ideas from the workshop.

A working template for ESOL delivery
Overview of how the working collaborative was started, processes and procedures for maximising funding, staff and resources.
The session will share a power point presentation that will showcase the 4 year journey to where we are now as a collaborative. We will outline the shared mission statement. Share what has and was has not worked well. The plan for the future.

Teach with Tech - Managing an interactive learning space
How to use videos in online and face to face sessions.
This workshop will focus on activities, tips and techniques for using videos in the ESOL classroom. It will look at differentiating activities with a focus on the fours skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. All activities are applicable to methods used in both online and blended learning.

Option D: Sarah Cox, Sandra McCumisky and Gerry Fox (Glasgow ESOL Forum)
ESOL beyond the classroom
In this interactive workshop we will present some of the work Glasgow ESOL Forum has delivered in the past few months and we will discuss approaches which take ESOL beyond the classroom learning environment . We will focus on our ESOL and photography course, our walking group and our SQA accredited Working with Others Unit which led to learners organising a ‘Kiltwalk’ event.
The workshop will provide opportunities for ESOL practitioners to share good practice in delivering ESOL activities using approaches which take ESOL beyond the classroom. Taking Glasgow ESOL Forum’s ESOL and photography class, Kiltwalk and walking group as a starting point, the workshop will generate discussion on approaches taken by other organisations and their particular significance as we come out of the pandemic.
As many organisations move to a blended model of ESOL delivery, how can we harness learning from online delivery during Covid and what approaches work well to blend ESOL with other skills? How can we utilise blended approaches to boost learners’ confidence, motivation autonomy? And what can we learn from each other’s delivery?
Who the session is aimed at: Anyone interested in ESOL, teachers, volunteers, coordinators. The session will be of particular interest to those using blended approaches to ESOL as we come out of the pandemic.
Option E: Steven Maclennan (Aberdeenshire Council – Community Learning and Development – Adult Learning Team)
ESOL approach to delivery through Covid 19 in Aberdeenshire
This workshop will focus on the delivery of ESOL in Aberdeenshire focusing on an online approach making use of G-Suite for Education, delivering lessons online across a geographical diverse area.
This workshop will look at the Aberdeenshire CLD teams approach to deliver ESOL across a geographically diverse local authority, look into and explore our use of the G Suite platform, WhatsApp and a previous foray into a blended learning approach with E-sgoil the Scottish National Digital School that informed our response to online delivery during Covid 19.
There will be some interactive elements and exploration of the G Suite platform with time for questions.
