About Rachel Öner

Rachel OnerRachel has considerable experience of EFL & ESOL and has been working in education and training since 1991, in teaching and management roles. She has worked in various sectors of FE in the UK and Spain, including private training providers, Adult Education, Work-based and Offender Learning.  Her specialist subjects are ESOL, English and Spanish, with particular interests in embedding, contextualising and resource development, as well as teacher training and quality improvement. Rachel has presented at several events, published work in national journals and written ESOL training resources for the Co-op, Association of Labour Providers and the National Skills Academy for Food and Drink. Currently she is working as a freelance consultant, examiner and EQA and facilitates the ETF’s ESOL Professional Exchange in the East of England.  Rachel specialises in tailoring training to a provider’s needs, however, her workshop topics include:


  • Embedding ESOL in vocational programmes
  • Understanding the needs of the ESOL learner on other programmes of study
  • Using authentic resources to engage learners
  • Creating active learning programmes in the English classroom
  • Digital tools in the classroom and blended learning approaches
  • Task-based learning and problem solving
  • Teaching maths & English together (including the language of maths)
  • Developing the confidence and skills of teachers and trainers
  • Preparing learners for Skills for Life Assessments
  • Learner and staff engagement in the teaching of English.
