Proposed government cuts to adult education: NATECLA’s response

As the voice for ESOL (English for speakers of other languages), NATECLA strongly opposes the government’s plans, announced on 26th February, for proposed cuts to adult education in England of up to 24% in 2015-16.

These cuts will lead to a significant reduction in the number of adults who are able to access further education including thousands of ESOL learners. This announcement comes during a period when high levels of unemployment are affecting every community and when education and training should be a priority to get the country back on track.
As a result of the cuts, thousands of talented and highly qualified teachers across the adult and community education sectors will also lose their jobs. Cutting the cost of ESOL in particular will also lead to additional costs in translation services, a growing welfare bill, a break down in community cohesion and, potentially, an increase in the risks of radicalization.

Access to ESOL provision for migrants is critical. It ensures migrants can participate fully in UK life and, as a result, contribute significantly to the economic success of the UK.

To ensure that poverty can be eradicated, our workplaces can thrive and our communities can prosper, the continued funding of adult education is essential.
