New ESOL qualifications finalised

New ESOL qualifications finalised

The new ESOL QCF (Qualifications and Credit Framework) qualifications have been approved by Ofqual for launch this September. A number of awarding organisations (AOs) will make their new qualifications available from next month although the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) will continue to fund  existing qualifications until January 2015. 

The new qualifications will consist of three Awards and structured as follows:

  • Reading - 6 credits
  • Writing - 9 credits
  • Speaking and Listening - 12 credits
  • The full ESOL certificate - 27 credits
The six Awarding Bodies who have developed these new qualifications include:

City & Guilds developed its new suite independently and has devised a slightly different version, with qualifications in reading, writing and speaking and listening ranging from nine to 12 credits and the combined certificate of all three ranging from 29 to 34 credits.
