Workshop details:

Language on the Streets: Making use of found language in the classroom, Sam Shepherd

This workshop will look at ways we can make use of "found language" - authentic English discovered in the contexts that students live, work, and socialise - as a resource in the language classroom. Language in this setting is found not only by the teacher, but also by the students, and could include multilingual texts, as well as English language only texts; texts which care both written and spoken. The workshop will allow tutors to identify practical techniques they can apply in their own practice either as complete ideas or as adaptations of their current practice

Snakes and ladders, Helen Cowgill

Snakes and Ladders is probably the most popular board game we play at our weekly Language Café.

This workshop will aim to share some experiences, activities and tips based on setting up and running a weekly Language Café for ESOL learners in a non-formal setting in the community. We are now in our fifth year.

The café helps asylum seekers and refugees begin to integrate into the local community through meeting with English- speaking volunteers for a cup of tea and a chat. We also play games, make music, do some art and crafts and talk about aspects of citizenship.  Most importantly we sit together, relax and learn from each other.

Bridging cultural difference, Bob Dignen

This short session introduces two teaching activities – one based on Thiagi’s experiential tradition of cross-cultural training, and one highly pragmatic behavioural / skills based approach – which can support teachers in ESOL increase awareness in their students of ‘culture' and ethnocentrism, and develop engagement with inclusive communication behaviours, in a dynamic, accessible and impactful manner.

Bob Dignen has been involved in language and communication training in the corporate world for over twenty years, and has published in the fields of intercultural communication and international leadership. He is also a regular speaker at IATEFL and BESIG (Business English Special Interest Group).
