Background to the event
Adults’ English, maths and language skills are critical to underpin improved personal, social and economic outcomes. At the same time, the pace of change across public services, work, technology, health and society requires that all adults have solid capabilities in using technology, personal finance, health and well-being and more, to be able to respond and adapt to the changes around them. One implication of this is that learners will benefit if practitioners are able to link English, maths and ESOL learning to these wider capabilities, and from their subject specialist perspectives, consider the interconnections between literacy, numeracy and language.
There are a number of challenges currently facing the sector, including the need to make English and maths learning relevant and engaging, particularly for adults with the lowest levels of skills, and the question of appropriate progression routes and qualifications for adult learners. This conference will bring together practitioners, researchers and policy makers in order to explore innovative ways in which English, maths and ESOL can help more adults to reach the levels of confidence, self-esteem, knowledge and skills which they need to make the most of their talents and to realise their ambitions in life.
These conference themes will be addressed by keynote speakers including the National Research and Development Centre for Adult Literacy and Numeracy, the Education and Training Foundation (TCB) and feature a European perspective on basic skills (TBC).
By the end of the conference, participants will have:
- increased their knowledge and understanding of the connections between language, literacy and numeracy and wider capabilities in the context of policy, research and practice for adult English, maths and ESOL learning;
- reflected on their own practice and identified ideas and resources to use with learners
