Keynote - Mary Brandon from Asylum Matters
Implications of the Nationality and Borders Act 2022
Mary will break down the implications of the Nationality and Borders Act 2022, explaining how its measures are likely to impact on the lives of people seeking asylum. She will look at efforts by communities across the UK to oppose this harmful piece of legislation, labelled the 'Anti-Refugee Laws' by campaigners, and share opportunities for ESOL teachers and students to get involved.
BIO
Mary Brandon is the Yorkshire & Humber Campaigns Manager with Asylum Matters, a national campaigning and advocacy charity that seeks to improve the lives of people seeking asylum through social and political change. Asylum Matters is co-secretariat for the Lift the Ban coalition, campaigning alongside close to 300 others for the right to work for people seeking asylum. Mary is a proud board member for Mafwa, a community theatre company that works with settled and new communities in Leeds, and a volunteer with Leeds City of Sanctuary.

Heart & Parcel
Heart & Parcel is a food and ESOL project based in Manchester. Its creative and informal approach to English language learning creates a safe and welcoming environment for all regardless of background or immigration status. Its focus on learners' individual needs, well-being, an improved sense of community and belonging means their provision is particularly appealing for refugee referrals and organisations. In this interactive workshop Clare will consider and demonstrate activities (food-related!) and decisions you can make in the ESOL classroom to ensure your learning space is welcoming and effective for people seeking refuge.
Sam Shepherd - Developing a Learner-Responsive ESOL Course
In this workshop we will look at how individuals can use tools developed from participatory pedagogy and beyond to develop not just a short series of lessons, and even a course, in order to meet the varied and complex needs of ESOL learners. We will start by defining and exploring the notions of participation, interaction and emergence, and how learning opportunities develop from the affordances presented by students and their experiences. We will then look at some practical ideas and how these might then develop into a course plan which is learner-responsive, rather than learner-led.
Bio
Sam Shepherd is an ESOL teacher and CELTA trainer currently working at Kirklees College, with 20 years’ experience in both the EFL and ESOL sectors. He is currently doing a PhD looking at how a course develops and emerges, and the barriers presented by the organisational constraints of a large FE college. Over time his interests have included using and exploiting technology to support learning, the barriers to professional development, and in the last ten years or so, developing a stripped-back approach to lessons and learning which engages with students as individuals and as a collective.
