Choosing a new qualification
These are some questions that teachers could ask as they decide which of the new qualifications is most suitable for their learners.
- How effectively does the qualification select and combine components of the ESOL curriculum?
- In reading and writing papers, do the questions asked reflect the word, sentence and text level structure(s) of the curriculum?
- What kind of assessment tasks are set? Are they meaningful, purposeful activities, appropriate for the level?
- Does the assessment of spoken language integrate speaking and listening in ways that reflect real life situations, including participation in discussion?
- How useful are the markschemes in providing feedback in relation to tasks, modes and levels?
- When looking for a qualification to use at different levels, does it show clear progression in the challenge and variety of assessment tasks and accompanying markschemes?
