Why do we need new ESOL qualifications?

ESOL programmes are designed to meet the language development needs of adult learners living and working in England, including settled communities, refugees and asylum seekers, or migrant workers resident in England. As with literacy and numeracy, ESOL programmes based on the core curriculum, use diagnostic assessment tools aligned to the national standards, and are introducing new learning materials. Until now there was a lack of qualifications fully aligned to the national standards as set out in the ESOL core curriculum.
