A review of workshops from this event are published in NATECLA News Winter edition.

Language and Identity is the theme of the 2004 NATECLA weekend conference to be held at the Royal Holloway College, part of the University of London. The conference takes place from 4.00pm on Friday 2 July through to 1pm on Sunday 4 July.

Guest Speakers
Annette Zera, member of the Crick committee
Barry Brooks, Deputy Director of the Adult Basic Skills
Strategy Unit of the DfES

Citizenship is currently a high profile topic and one which will affect all of us involved in teaching ESOL and community languages. We are pleased to announce that Annette Zera will be our keynote speaker on the Friday evening. This promises to be a lively and interactive session.

On Sunday lunchtime the closing plenary will be delivered by Barry Brooks, the Deputy Director of the Adult Basic Skills Strategy Unit of DfES. Barry has worked with Skills for Life since the outset and was previously at QCA.

On Saturday and Sunday there will be an exciting array of workshops including diagnostic assessments, integrated IT, E-learning, differentiation, literacy, music and ESOL, English through drama, teaching tips and many more. Details of all workshops will be confirmed nearer the date.

This conference will provide opportunities to network with colleagues, meet new friends and buy that all important new book or tape at the resources exhibition.

The venue itself is the magnificent Royal Holloway College, founded in 1879 and opened by Queen Victoria in 1886. The college is set in 100 acres of Surrey countryside which boasts an ornamental lake and a variety of bird, animal and plant life. The college location is Egham, on the doorstep of the site of the signing of the Magna Carta, the River Thames and Windsor Castle.

To feed the body as well as the mind we have arranged a sumptuous conference dinner on the Saturday evening, with magical entertainment, in the elegant surroundings of the Founders dining room.
