NATECLA supports the Ruth Hayman Trust. The trust gives grants to support the education and training of adults resident in the UK whose first language is not English. Priority is given to helping with fees but grants may also be given towards books and essential equipment.
Ruth Hayman was a founder member and the first secretary of the organisation. The trust is not large. It has no paid officers but over 90% of what it raises is awarded to applicants.

This year, 2008, is the Ruth Hayman Trust’s Silver Jubilee. We celebrated with an event at South Africa House on 15 May.
The appeal
For the past four years, with the support of many members of the national association for teachers of English to adults (NATECLA), we have given away an average of £16,000 annually to help fund the education and training of adults with a first language other than English, and who would not otherwise be able to afford to study. But by the end of this financial year we will have less than £10.000 in hand. At our recent rate of giving that will go by December 2008 but, as ESOL teachers know full well, students will continue to struggle. We therefore desperately need to raise funds. Please help. Every donation is valuable. The costs of studying are constantly rising. For anyone trying to enter higher education, the IELTS examination fee is nearly £100 today. And the Trust is once more supporting people settled here who need basic ESOL, as well as those on academic and vocational courses. So please be as generous as you can.
