National Conference and Exhibition 2010
9, 10, 11 July at University of Surrey, Guildford, GU2 7XH
Language, Migration and Identity

The keynote address, closing plenary and some workshop presentations can be downloaded from this page.
 Professor Celia Roberts
The keynote address Language Migration and the Gatekeepers will be given by Professor Celia Roberts.
Celia Roberts is Professor of Applied Linguistics at King’s College London in the Department of Education and Professional Studies. She has been working in the field of language, culture and discourse for thirty years and has written, co-written and co-edited five books and over 100 articles and chapters in books. Over the last ten years she has undertaken research on effective practice in ESOL, in doctor-patient communication in linguistically diverse settings and in job interviews and ethno-linguistic disadvantage.

The conference offers a choice of workshops covering a wide range of practical and theoretical themes for both new and experienced teachers, teacher trainers, researchers and managers. See below for the list of confirmed workshops. There are opportunities for networking, catching up with the latest developments, participating in the Voice of  the Conference debate, visiting the resources exhibition and attending a performance by Actors for Human Rights - the outreach arm of IceandFire which performs documentary scripts, exploring human rights stories through performance. http://iceandfire.co.uk/  This will be sponsored by Trinity College London.

On Sunday following the final workshop session we pleased to announce that Keith Best, Chief Executive of the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture has accepted our invitation to talk about the Foundation’s current work and priorities. Keith will focus on what he perceives to be the key current issues facing refugees and asylum seekers and draw on knowledge from his sixteen years with the Immigration Advisory Service (IAS).

The Medical Foundation offers medical consultation, examination and forensic documentation of injuries, psychological treatment and support, and practical help. Central to the MF's vision are its efforts to educate the public and decision makers about torture and its consequences, while advocacy work strives to ensure that the UK honours its international obligations towards survivors of torture, asylum seekers and refugees.

Torture is no respecter of class, status or achievement,” says Keith Best the CEO at the Medical Foundation. “I met people who have been deeply traumatised by the experience of torture – they bear the scars both physically and mentally.”
